Einige dieser Modelle entwickelte Kurt Weitzmann. Er befasste sich unter anderem mit der Cotton-Genesis, einer frühchristliche Handschrift, welche größtenteils durch einen model zerstört wurde. Die Mosaizisten der Vorhalle von San Marco verwendeten die Cotton-Genesis als dessen Vorbild. Weitzmann entwarf zu dieser Verbindung eine Hypothese zu der Entwicklung von Abbildungen des Alten Testaments, dessen Herkunft jener Darstellungsformen er in spätantiken jüdischen bebilderten Ausführungen der Heilige Schrift erachtet. Resultierend entsteht folglich für die Erschaffung der Welt die Problematik, ob sie vorausgehende vorchristliche Bildebenen liefert.
Eine besondere Rolle nimmt dabei die Oktateuch ein.
