Der Determinismus schließt das freie Handeln aus. Er lässt keinen Platz für Handlungsvariationen, sagen die Inkompatibilisten. Das Leben der individual verläuft geradlinig, ohne Abzweigungen und Entscheidungen. Alles ist vorherbestimmt, die individual kann dagegen nicht ankommen. Würde sie jetzt einen freien Willen besitzen, müsste sie an verschiedenen Zeitpunkten in ihrem Leben Entscheidungen treffen können. Sie müsste sich für Variante a, b oder c entscheiden können und somit einen Abzweig frei wählen können. Das macht den Determinismus anscheinend unmöglich. Beides scheint sich auszuschließen – entweder haben wir einen freien Willen, die Freiheit existiert. Dann ist der Determinismus nicht wahr, unsere Handlungen sind nicht durch frühere Ereignisse oder die Naturgesetze vorherbestimmt. Dies wäre die place des Libertariers. Oder der Determinismus ist wahr, dann kann sich die individual niemals anders entscheiden und niemals anders handeln. Die Entscheidungen und Handlungen gehen niemals auf die individual zurück, sondern nur auf frühere Ereignisse. additionally ist die individual in ihrem Handeln nicht frei, da sowieso determiniert ist, wie sie handelt. Dies wäre nun die place des Skeptikers. Doch beide Positionen, additionally die des Libertariers und die des Skeptikers, scheinen zu zeigen, dass Freiheit und Determinismus nicht kompatibel sind.
