Sokrates’ Gespräch in Platons conversation „Phaidon“ bezieht sich auf die Themen des Todes und des Weiterlebens und enthält philosophische Grundgedanken über die Unsterblichkeit der Seele. Nicht zuletzt sind die Ausführungen des Sokratesschüler zum Todesthema obtrusive, weil sie vom letzten Lebenstag des antiken Philosophen berichten, bevor er durch das reward des Schierlingsbechers sterben soll.
Vor diesem Hintergrund sind die Überlegungen einzelner Philosophen der Geschichte zum Todesthema interessant. Die vorliegende Arbeit kann und will jedoch kein Kompendium darstellen, das repräsentative philosophische Todesdiskurse von der Antike bis zur Gegenwart nachzeichnet. Es soll exemplarisch ein textual content des bis heute einflussreichen Autors aus dem frühen 17. Jahrhundert von Michel de Montaigne untersucht werden, der sich sowohl inhaltlich als auch formal auf vielfältige Weise dem Todesthema annähert. Hierbei muss gleichsam vorangestellt werden, dass der Autor der vorliegenden Arbeit Montaigne als Philosophen und Literaten versteht, ohne dabei die beiden Bezeichnungen voneinander zu trennen. Als Erklärung, die im Laufe der Arbeit substanziert wird: Montaignes Denkarbeit ist das eines kritischen Verfahrens. Und dieses findet statt in dem Modus eines offenen Textverfahrens, der shape des Essays, dessen Erscheinen von der literaturgeschichtlichen Forschung vor allem mit Montaigne verknüpft ist.
Sein Essay „Philosophieren heißt sterben lernen“, dessen Titel bereits den von ihm in der frühen Neuzeit wieder aufgegriffenen Ansatz der antiken Todesverständigung andeutet, soll Aufschluss über seine Kommunikation über das Todesthema geben, ebenso wie sein einige Jahre darauf verfasster textual content „Von den Gesichtszügen“.
