Von einer eigentlichen oder gar intensiven Erforschung seines Werks kann nur in beschränktem Maß gesprochen werden, weil eine "eher volkstümlich geprägte Literatur zu Hofer vorherrschte." Erst nach dem Jahrhundertwechsel (das lang ersehnte Werkverzeichnis erschien 2008) und mit einem neuen Blick auf die Entwicklung der Kunst und speziell der deutschen Malerei seit 1950 stellt sich bei der genauen examine heraus, dass die Malerei Hofers durch ihre feste Verwurzelung in der klassisch-idealistischen, deutsch-römischen culture, die durch die Natonalsozialisten missbraucht wurde und so nicht mehr bruchlos fortgeführt werden konnte, in Widerspruch zum allgemeinen Zeitgeist der Nachkriegszeit geriet. Dieser Widerspruch aber conflict so tief greifend und von allgemein bedeutender Natur, dass er nicht nur als Nachhall auf einige der nachfolgenden jungen deutschen Künstler gewirkt, sondern ihr Werk grundlegend geprägt hat. Damit nimmt Hofers Werk jenseits seiner bisweilen prophetischen Düsternis und enigmatischen Ikonographie eine zentrale Stellung innerhalb der deutschen figurativen Malerei im 20. Jahrhundert ein, die ohne die Frage nach dem schwierigen Umgang mit der "deutschen Kunst" und der "deutschen culture" insgesamt nicht zu verstehen wäre.
